After a successfull week of racing with the Tobago Cycling Classic, team 1% was ready for the main event, the UCI 1.2 Tour of Tobago ! Over 112km of challenging terrain were facing the international field to crown the 2011 champion.
How it unfold
With 4 days of racing behind them, Team 1% already had lost Etienne Samson and Chris Gruber in crashes leaving the team to a reduced force. Last minute addition, came with local climber Barry Luces who was happy to wear the blue team 1% outfit. Straight from the gun start, attacks were going and Louis-Charles Lacroix marked the move along with Jean-Michel Lachance who also jump in. The move did not last long as a compact peloton started together the first climb of the day, around 4km of medium gradient.
Team 1%' Nick Daems, from Belgium, already had ants in one's pants and was forcing the pace at front. Quickly Jean-Michel went to the front to calm Nick and set the tempo himself to save Nick legs. Only halfway up the hill and the damages could be seen on the field with riders dropping quickly from the pace. Around 3/4 up the hill, Nils Penton attacked the peloton and quickly gained a substantial advantage. A little while later, Nick bridged across to Nils who worked together and pass the summit together with around 30sec advantage on the peloton controled by Jean-Michel.
Unfortunately, Nils punctured on the descent and had to wait the peloton for assistance while Nick was growing his now solo lead. Only 30km into the race, the first climb and descent reduced the leading peloton to around 15-20 riders with Team 1% well represented with Nils, Jean-Michel and Rob Scheffler still in the mix. By mid-race, Nick had grown his lead to an impressive 5min advantage with the team controlling behind. While the heat took his toll on many riders, the race turned into a real survivor race with everyone battling to just be able to finish the race.
Thanks to his lead, Nick grabed all the KOM points and was caught by Ricardo Zoidl of Austria only a few kilometers from the finish. Still, Nick was able to finish very strong securing the second spot along with the KOM and Best young rider prizes. Nils, Jean-Michel and Barry Luces finished in 11, 16 and 21 respectively for a strong overall team performance.
A promising futur
The Tour of Tobago and the Tobago Cycling Classic were a huge success this year and team 1% would like to thanks Jeffrey Charles and his team for all the efforts used to organize the event. Team 1% reachs his goal of promotion through the impressive media coverage received including the ESPN nbetwork, Cyclingnews.com and many significant others. The Tour of Tobago really is a unique event and definitely has a promising futur ahead. Team 1% look forward to come back and improve on our performances.
Team 1% at your rescue
On a side note, just as we were leaving for the airport to go back home, early at around 5h50 AM, monday after the Tour of Tobago, I hardly heard some noises comming from the window. Then I paid more attention and realize someone was screaming "Help ! Help !" Immediately, I told the guys and Louis-Charles saw someone drowning in the ocean in front of the hotel ! Him and I immediatelty ran over the beach, cross the closed fences and jumped in the water to bring the drowning men back. Looking at him, it seams he's been there for a while ! In a hurry to catch our plane, we reached security who call an ambulance for him and we made sure he was ok before we left the beach. Kind of a schock to save someone that early in the morning !
